Come Lend a Hand to New Immigrants! Tel Aviv-Jaffa

I've always loved languages. Russian especially — something about it always pulled me in, long before I had any practical reason to learn it. So when I came across the "Yad LaOlim" nonprofit and heard they were looking for volunteers to teach Hebrew to new immigrants — most of them from the former Soviet Union, though not only; the organization welcomes olim from every background and every country — I didn't hesitate for a second.

The place is exactly what it sounds like: a room full of people who want to improve their Hebrew, with zero judgment and zero pressure. All Hebrew, from the very first minute. I wasn't there to teach a grammar lesson — I was there to sit, talk, and give someone a chance to practice without being afraid to get it wrong.

What struck me most were the people. Every age, every kind of background, all carrying the same quiet determination: they've made this new country their home, and they're determined to belong here properly, through the language. Nobody there is waiting for someone else to do it for them.

So to everyone who likes to complain that new immigrants don't learn Hebrew — here's your chance. Come volunteer, sit with them for half an hour. You'll meet wonderful people who genuinely want to learn, and just need someone to show up for them.

It happened on a Sunday, and right after, the whole group headed together to another round of language exchange — this time at Cafe Hachashmal, where the language changes but the idea stays exactly the same: sit with people, talk, and learn from each other.
